Today, at the 5th of December, we celebrate the annual World Soil Day (WSD) and its campaign “Soils: Where food begins” as a mean to focus attention on the importance of healthy soil and to advocate for the sustainable management of soil resources. An essential variable characterizing soil health is soil moisture. Soil moisture is essential for plant growth by enabling photosynthesis and acting as the solvent and carrier of nutrients. The International Soil Moisture Network (ISMN, https://ismn.earth) at the ICWRGC/BfG in Koblenz (Germany) helps with these goals by providing freely available and harmonized in situ soil moisture measurements for the environmental and climate change assessments and the validation of satellite products and environmental models.
