Return of on-site conferences

ICWRGC researchers attended geoscientific conferences on water and environment across Europe

After two years, major scientific conferences and workshops have resumed in-person attendance in 2022. ICWRGC researchers participated in various capacities in these scientific events across Europe. Recently, our researchers attended the European Geoscience Union (EGU) General Assembly in Vienna, Austria; the ESA Living Planet Symposium (LPS) in Bonn, Germany and the 6th Satellite Soil Moisture and Application Workshop in Perugia, Italy.

EGU General Assembly, Vienna, May 23-27, 2022

ICWRGC-affiliated researchers Renee van Dongen, Fay Lena Boehmer and Tunde Olarinoye were present at EGU from May 23-27, 2022. Fay and Tunde work within the International Soil Moisture Network (ISMN) being transferred from the Technical University Vienna (TU Wien) to ICWRGC/BfG in Koblenz. Tunde gave a talk on “The International Soil Moisture Network: supporting and advancing EO research through open source in-situ soil moisture observations“ which was co-authored by all the ISMN team members. He talked about the ongoing transfer of the ISMN and efforts to position soil moisture among critical earth observation variables. Both Tunde and Fay participated in various discussions where they engaged the research community on the critical importance of soil moisture, solicited new data providers and encouraged continuous community support for ISMN. Tunde also co-convened the session “Large-sample hydrology: characterizing and understanding hydrological diversity and catchment organization”. It featured presentations on methods, data and advances in the understanding and modelling of hydrological diversity.

Renee showcased her work that is part of the URSACHEN project, a collaborative project between BfG and ICWRGC. Renee presented preliminary insights on the global relationships between suspended sediment concentration data and river discharge data, obtained from GEMStat and the Global Runoff Data Centre, respectively. This study will help to understand how sediment dynamics behave differently in various catchments around the world. Furthermore, Renee convened the session “Crowd-solving Problems in Earth Sciences” which is a session that, unlike the other EGU sessions, focuses on discussing problems and issues that many (early-career) geoscientists face in their scientific careers.

Besides the ICWRGC researchers who were on-site in Vienna for EGU 2022, Luna Bharati also joined the conference online. Luna co-authored in a study presented by her PhD student, Dipesh Chapagain from Bonn University, Germany. The presentation discussed research findings on the impact of climate change on disaster mortality in Nepal.

ESA Living Planet Symposium, Bonn, May 23- 27, 2022

It was indeed a week filled with science as our researchers Stephan Dietrich and Matthias Zink attended the ESA Living Planet Symposium in the same week as the EGU General Assembly was held. Stephan gave a talk on “Consistent monitoring of global water cycle and resources variability across scales: Where do we stand?”. Stephan and Matthias were actively involved in engaging with the soil moisture community as well as with international in-situ observation communities like the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) and the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS). They have used the opportunity to promote the International Soil Moisture Network (ISMN) and reached out to potentially new data providers. The ISMN team of ICWRGC-BfG, together with colleagues from TU Wien, also co-authored a presentation “The International Soil Moisture Network: an open source in-situ soil moisture database serving the EO climate community for over a decade” which was presented in the poster session and followed by intriguing discussions.

6th Satellite Soil Moisture and Application Workshop, Perugia, Italy, June 7-9, 2022

Another ISMN team member, Wolfgang Korres from the M5 department of BfG which jointly host the ISMN with ICWRGC, participated in the 6th Satellite Soil Moisture and Application Workshop in Perugia. The workshop was kicked off by a “QA4SM User Workshop” (Quality assurance for soil moisture). There, Matthias Zink virtually joined Wolfgang and many others to learn more about an online soil moisture data validation tool hosted by TU Wien. Wolfgang gave a talk on the migration of ISMN to ICWRGC/BfG, as well as updates to ISMN (user/provider statistics, flagging) systems. Numerous contacts were made with the user community, potential new data providers and representatives of WMO. The permanent funding of ISMN by ICWRGC/BfG was highly praised at the final panel discussion as a positive example for sustainable cooperation and data management.

Nutrient Loads in South Africa

Blanca Torres Vara from the Technical University of Munich (TUM) stayed at the ICWRGC from 15.10.2018–14.04.2019 to write her Master’s thesis dealing with “Nutrient Loads in South Africa”. She successfully completed this thesis in May 2019.

Cultural eutrophication is caused by the increase of anthropogenic nutrient loads and is one of the main water quality issues in the world, threatening biodiversity and human development. South Africa is especially vulnerable to the effects of eutrophication due to its reliance on reservoirs to supply water. The estimation of nutrient loads has been proved a powerful tool in the environmental management of nutrient pollution but it has yet not been implemented in South African environmental policy.

This Master’s thesis takes this opportunity and assesses spatial and temporal variability of total oxidized nitrogen and orthophosphate loads in South Africa from 1990 to 2018. It has the following threefold goals:

  • To improve the knowledge about the water quality status in South Africa with respect to nutrient loads, their influencing factors, such as land use or precipitation, and its future development.
  • To provide a tool for the environmental management of nutrient river loads. It identifies the areas most severely affected within the study area, allowing a better allocation of resources.
  • To serve as a pilot project for the development of integrated data products in the framework of the Global Terrestrial Network – Hydrology (GTN-H).

The study shows that the nutrient status in South African rivers has a strong seasonal component, 70% of the annual nutrient load is exported during the wet season. The segments assessed are split between nutrient sinks and nutrient sources for nitrogen and phosphate. The Limpopo, Vaal and Berg rivers have been identified as priority areas with regards of nutrient loads, mainly due to intense agriculture and urban development. The natural retention capacity shown in other river segments could provide an economical and environmental friendly nutrient management measure for such areas. The implementation of measures involving the estimation of river nutrient loads in South Africa is achievable with the data available and can contribute to ensure the water quality of South Africa in the future.

15th International German Summer School on Hydrology (IGSH) – Groundwater and Urbanization

Bochum, 08–22 September 2021

The 15th ”International German Summer School on Hydrology (IGSH)”, supported by ICWRGC, will be held at Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB) from 8 – 22 September 2021 with this year’s focus on “Groundwater and Urbanization”. The aim of IGSH is to enhance the knowledge and technical capabilities of early career professionals and academics on hydrology-related environmental issues.

The International German Summer School on Hydrology focuses on training international junior scientists and early professionals from the fields of water and the environment, engineering sciences, as well as from geography, hydrology, chemistry, etc. IGSH provides an annually varying programme of hydrological training courses. The courses serve as a platform to establish scientific cooperation and social networks, and to extend the IGSH scientific community. Generally, the Summer School courses provide knowledge transfer and exchange on hydro(geo)logical processes relevant in energy production and management. Course attendants may receive 4 Credit Points to use in their study and doctoral programmes if they pass the final examination.

Start of URSACHEN project sampling campaigns

The team members of the URSACHEN project, a collaborative project between the German Federal Institute of Hydrology and International Centre for Water Resources and Global Change, have conducted their first sampling campaign. URSACHEN investigates the uncertainties in river load estimations caused by the spatial and temporal variability of suspended solid concentrations and their chemical composition.

The project has planned two types of sampling campaigns to investigate these temporal and spatial variations in the Rhine river. Despite the delays due to COVID-19, URSACHEN has now started the series of sampling campaigns focusing on temporal variability. The sampling campaigns focusing on spatial variability are expected to begin in December 2020.

The temporal variability campaigns were conducted at all 3 focus locations (Koblenz, Brohl, Emmerich; figure 1), at low river discharge in the Rhine. The URSACHEN team members were to take river water samples at 15 seconds intervals for a duration of 10 minutes. The 2L samples needed to be split over two sample bottles while the sediment was still in suspension. Two different BfG sections would then analyse the two bottles as to their sediment concentration, grain size distribution and chemical composition.

This sampling set-up required a smooth-routine, with 6 persons involved. Two persons took samples using Van Dorn bottles. These special Van Dorn bottles allow water sampling with limited disturbances of the water flow and its turbulences. The Van Dorn bottles are tubes with 2 lids on both sides that can be opened (picture 2). When a weight hits the Van Dorn sampler’s closing mechanism, the lids automatically close. After taking the sample, it was poured in the funnel connected to a sample splitter separating the sample in two representative portions (Figure 3). Next, the lids needed to be opened again for the next sample.

The URSACHEN team will repeat this sampling campaign at average and high river discharge. As mentioned above, the spatial variability campaigns will start soon, where river cross-section samples will be taken from the Rhine at Koblenz, Brohl and Emmerich.
