Nährstofffrachten in Südafrika

Blanca Torres Vara von der TU München (TUM) hat ihre Masterarbeit über “Nährstofffrachten in Südafrika” vom 15.10.2018–14.04.2019 am ICWRGC geschrieben. Im Mai 2019 hat sie die Arbeit erfolgreich verteidigt.

Kulturbedingte Eutrophierung wird durch den Anstieg von anthropogenen Nährstofffrachten verursacht und ist eines der Kernprobleme bei der Wasserqualität weltweit. Sie bedroht die Biodiversität und die menschliche Entwicklung. Aufgrund seiner Abhängigkeit von Wasserspeichern für die Wasserversorgung ist Südafrika besonders anfällig für die Auswirkungen der Eutrophierung. Die Einschätzung von Nährstofffrachten hat sich als wertvolles Werkzeug beim Umweltmanagement von Nährstoffverschmutzungen erwiesen, sie ist jedoch noch nicht in der südafrikanischen Umweltpolitik angewandt worden.

Diese Lücke greift diese Masterarbeit auf und bestimmt die räumliche und zeitliche Variabilität der gesamten oxidierten Stickstoff- und Orthophosphatfrachten in Südafrika von 1990 bis 2018. Sie hat die folgenden drei Ziele:

  • Verbesserung der Kenntnisse über den Wasserqualitätsstatus in Südafrika im Hinblick auf Nährstofffrachten, ihre Einflussfaktoren wie Landnutzung oder Niederschlag und die weitere Entwicklung.
  • Bereitstellung eines Instruments für das Umweltmanagement von Nährstofffrachten in Flüssen. Dieses bestimmt die am schlimmsten betroffenen Gebiete im Untersuchungsgebiet, was eine bessere Ressourcenverteilung ermöglicht.
  • Funktion als Pilotprojekt zur Entwicklung von integrierten Datenprodukten im Rahmen des Globalen Terrestrischen Netzwerks – Hydrologie (GTN-H).

Die Studie zeigt, dass der Nährstoffstatus in südafrikanischen Flüssen eine starke saisonale Komponente aufweist, wobei 70% der jährlichen Nährstofffrachten während der Regenzeit auftreten. Die untersuchten Segmente werden für Stickstoff und Phosphat in Nährstoffsenken und Nährstoffquellen unterteilt. Die Flüsse Limpopo, Vaal und Berg sind mit Bezug auf Nährstofffrachten als Schwerpunktgebiete identifiziert worden, hauptsächlich aufgrund intensiver Landwirtschaft und städtebaulicher Entwicklung. Die natürliche Rückhaltekapazität, die sich in anderen Flussabschnitten zeigt, könnte eine kostengünstige und umweltfreundliche Bewirtschaftungsmaßnahme für solche Gebiete sein. Die Implementierung von Maßnahmen zur Abschätzung von Nährstofffrachten in Flüssen kann mit den vorhandenen Daten durchgeführt werden. Sie kann zur Sicherstellung der künftigen Wasserqualität in Südafrika beitragen.
